What whale transactions are

A "whale transaction", in the context bitcoinnews.io tracks, is any unconfirmed Bitcoin transaction sitting in the mempool whose total output value exceeds 10 BTC. These are transactions large enough to represent meaningful capital movement — exchange transfers, custodial rebalancing, over-the-counter settlement, or large holders moving funds between wallets. Watching them as they enter the mempool gives a real-time view of large-value activity before it is even confirmed on-chain.

Why a 10 BTC threshold

10 BTC is a round, meaningful threshold that filters out routine retail and exchange housekeeping transactions while still surfacing activity frequently enough to be useful as a live signal. It is a fixed parameter chosen by bitcoinnews.io, not an industry standard — other trackers use different cutoffs, commonly ranging from 1 BTC to 100+ BTC depending on their purpose.

What watching whales tells you

A sudden cluster of large transactions can precede or coincide with volatility — large holders moving coins onto exchanges is sometimes (though not reliably) associated with intent to sell, while movement into cold storage or between self-custody wallets is more neutral. Whale activity is one of two inputs (alongside fee pressure) behind Mempool Heat, bitcoinnews.io's composite network activity score. It is a signal to factor in, not a standalone trading indicator — treat sudden spikes as a prompt to look closer, not a conclusion on their own.

Output value caveat

The value shown for each transaction is the sum of all its outputs, not the amount transferred to a new party. Bitcoin transactions almost always include a change output that returns unspent funds to the sender's own wallet. A transaction with 40 BTC in total output might represent only a few BTC actually sent externally, with the rest returning as change. Treat the figures as an indicator of transaction size, not a precise measure of value changing hands. This is the same caveat that applies to the fuller mempool picture on the Bitcoin Mempool page.

Data source and update frequency

Whale transactions are sourced from the mempool.space /api/mempool/recent endpoint, filtered server-side to unconfirmed transactions with total output above 10 BTC. bitcoinnews.io polls this endpoint approximately every 8 seconds; the list above updates live via the dashboard's data feed.

Limitations

  • Only unconfirmed (mempool) transactions are shown here — once a transaction confirms, it drops out of this list even if it was a large whale movement.
  • The recent-transactions endpoint reflects a snapshot of the mempool.space public node and may not capture every whale-sized transaction broadcast network-wide, particularly during high-volume periods.
  • Fee rate is calculated as total fee divided by virtual size and reflects what the sender paid, not a market-wide average.
